Samantha (Sam) Troff, Minnesota, Death- Minnesota | Wildlife Scientist and Raptor Conservationist Remembered After Tragic Accident

It is with profound sadness that we honor and remember the life of Samantha (Sam) Troff, a devoted wildlife professional, passionate conservationist, and deeply cherished partner, friend, and colleague. Sam’s life was one defined by extraordinary dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the natural world.

Sam joined the Wildlife Science Center as an intern while pursuing her degree in Fisheries and Wildlife through Oregon State University. From the beginning, her work ethic stood out in an exceptional way. She balanced more than 40 hours a week as an intern, 15–20 hours as a farmhand, and continued her academic studies with determination and discipline. Her drive reflected not only ambition, but a genuine love for learning and for the work she was pursuing.

As her time at the Wildlife Science Center progressed, Sam discovered a profound passion for birds, particularly raptors, and became deeply involved in the organization’s raptor program. Her care for the animals she worked with was personal and heartfelt—she did not see them as tasks or responsibilities, but as living beings she deeply connected with and protected. Her presence elevated the care and compassion within the entire program.

Upon completing her internship, Sam was offered a position on the animal care staff, where she continued to grow professionally and personally. She eventually followed her calling into raptor-focused work, continuing her journey at both the Raptor Center on a university campus and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. In every role she held, Sam’s dedication to wildlife conservation and rehabilitation remained unwavering.

Those who knew Sam also knew Shelby, her soulmate and life partner. The bond they shared was one of deep love, partnership, and mutual support. Shelby stood beside Sam throughout her journey and remained her closest companion in life. Tragically, both of their lives were cut short in a motorcycle accident last week, leaving family, friends, and colleagues heartbroken and struggling to comprehend such a profound loss.

Sam’s impact extended far beyond her professional contributions. She inspired those around her with her passion for wild places and wild creatures, and her energy left a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy lives on through the animals she cared for, the people she mentored, and the love she shared so freely.

A celebration of life for Samantha and Shelby will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Irving & John Anderson County Park in North Branch, Minnesota.

Sam will be remembered always for her fierce dedication, her gentle spirit, and the beauty she brought into the world. Fly free, bird woman.
